I believe that anyone who is interested in a custom instrument is probably passionate about music. I want to make an instrument that begs to be picked up and played. A custom instrument is much more than scale length and bracing patterns. The measurements and the numbers; the specs, are the necessary framework on which to build the essence of the instrument. I like to try to find out as much about the person I’m building for as I can. Like what kind of music do you like, what do you do, what things in life move you. It is these elements of who you are that we can funnel into this truly unique instrument.
I do not build instruments full time. I have a full time job as a design engineer and quality manager in a small tool & die shop. Building guitars is a passion that I have. If I never sold another instrument, I would continue to make them because it is so much fun. Because I don't have to rely on instrument making to feed myself and my family, I am able to charge a little less than a lot of other full time luthiers. On the flipside, it will take me longer to build your instrument. But your instrument will be the only one I work on. I don't have models. Everyone starts from scratch. I have acces to design software, so I am able to design your instrument quickly and make changes to the design accurately.
I like to design instruments that showcase the natural beauty of the wood. I prefer to use all wood components, foregoing any plastic (bindings, nuts, and saddles). It feels more natural to me. I feel that with the right design and the right combination of materials the beauty of a well made instrument can be amazing.
